Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention more on the game.

The actual improvement in his abilities began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly challenge one another. He had access into several of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world today. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
