Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he liked participating in various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The real improvement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would often challenge one another. Howard had access into a few of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. He headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
