Gus Hansen enjoyed a marvelous year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only gambler to achieve closing table in three of the events. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You may remember one of the largest pots in high stakes poker history up against Daniel Negreanu. Gus raked in a massive pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has earned many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the best bettors anywhere in the world. While wagering on net poker, a different side of Hansen has emerged. He frequently participates in the 200/400 NL maximum buy-in of $40, 000. Hansen more often than not buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and gambles very poorly. He waits for a good hand and then pushes all in. I believe Hansen is an amazing poker player but certainly not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless he is flat broke, he has little or no reason to play at the table with the min buy in.
Playing for the min takes most of the ability out of deep stack poker. Hansen is accepted to be one of the greatest poker players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy-in for the full dollar value. I think television can skew our view of the real world sometimes. The greatest players in the world may be players you have won’t have heard of before. Gus can be seen gambling on net poker on Full Tilt. He normally competes in high stakes omaha eight-or-better and texas holdem. Gus has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his skills in cash rounds?
