Gus Hansen experienced a marvelous year on the WPT where he was the only participant to achieve last poker table in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may recall one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. He won a large pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has earned many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the best gamblers in the world. While betting on internet poker, another side of Hansen has emerged. Gus frequently plays in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus usually buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very weak. He waits for a decent hand and then goes all in. I know Gus is an excellent poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless he is penniless, he has no reason to play at the table with the minimum buy-in.
Playing for the min takes almost all of the ability out of big stack poker. Hansen is presumed to be one of the best poker players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the total amount. I think television can alter our perception of the real world at times. The best poker players in the world might just be guys you have won’t have heard of. Gus can be seen playing web poker on Full Tilt. He commonly competes in big stakes omaha high and hold’em. Gus has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his talents in money games?
