Pai Gow Poker is a modern game with ancient origins. Built on the old Chinese tile game and the modern American version of poker, Pai Gow poker joins the east with the western in an excellent game for early level gamblers.

Pai Gow is a poker game that pits the player vs. the croupier, unlike almost all other poker games that players play against other players. By gambling against the dealer, starting players don’t need to fret about any other, more experienced people taking their moolla.

Another Pai Gow advantage is the generally leisurely game pace, novices can take their time and strategize without needing to make quick selections.

Pai Gow uses 53 cards; the normal 52-card standard deck and a single joker. The gambler is dealt seven cards face up and the dealer is dealt 7 cards face down.

A 5 card hand and one two card hand have to be made from the seven cards, the five card hand has to be higher than the two card hand. To win, a player needs both of his hand totals to be better than the dealer’s.

Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may recall one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. He won a large pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has earned many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the best gamblers in the world. While betting on internet poker, another side of Hansen has emerged. Gus frequently plays in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus usually buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very weak. He waits for a decent hand and then goes all in. I know Gus is an excellent poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless he is penniless, he has no reason to play at the table with the minimum buy-in.

Playing for the min takes almost all of the ability out of big stack poker. Hansen is presumed to be one of the best poker players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the total amount. I think television can alter our perception of the real world at times. The best poker players in the world might just be guys you have won’t have heard of.
