Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked gambling on various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played countless hours and lost most times. He earned some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus even more on the game.

The definite advancement in his skills began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge one another. Howard had access into some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
