Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he loved participating in various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he would play extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and concentrate more on poker.

The real improvement in his game happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would often play against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest players in chess. With their help, he would hone his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker world today. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
